We asked some editorial staff members to select the best books, movies, and records of the last twenty years. The choice was challenging, but this is the final selection.
20 Artists for the Future
Twenty years from now, these names will still be here. That, at least, is our bet. In literature, photography, art, and fashion, these are the faces that will hold the cards in the future.
1. Catarina VasconcelosWith the gift of words in her hand, the Portuguese filmmaker began her journey far from the world where she eventually made a career. With a formal education in design, Vasconcelos' aesthetic aptitude is one of the most identifiable characteristics of her art. The highly regarded feature film A Metamorphosis of the Birds (2020) was the director's first, an omen of the success to come.
2. Luka Spaziani-BoothThe Briton began his education in painting but ended up clinging to the camera. Still, time was not wasted - the best way to describe Spaziani-Booth's work in words is to say that he photographs as if he were drawing brushstrokes on a canvas. As a curiosity: his work has already been published in the pages of Vogue Portugal.
3. Marta Pais de OliveiraShe made herself known in 2020, when she won the Revelation Agustina Bessa-Luís Prize, with her first novel, Excavators. The young author, born in Vila Nova de Gaia, has now published her fourth work, Medula, which won her the Nortear award, given to writers from Galicia and the North of the country. Besides writing, he has been in Mozambique implementing distance learning systems. Another of his missions is to help Fashion become more sustainable.
4. Fillipo Scotti There is something about a man with an enviable bone structure and a vast, curly mane of hair... We could be talking about Timothée Chalamet, but it's Filippo Scotti, the young Italian actor who we will still see in many movie theaters. After being in plays in Naples, he made his big screen debut with The Hand of God, which won him an award at the Venice Film Festival in 2021.
5. Rachelle Cunningham If Rachelle Cunningham's work could be summed up in a few words, we would say it is an ode to femininity. The Irish artist's paintings - and collaborations made with houses such as Chanel and Nina Ricci - evoke the hallmarks of the modernist tradition, whether in detail or color. In her work, there is no lack of nature, history, and inspiration she draws from being a woman.
6. Alma BerrowSince when is a cigarette butt art? Since Alma Berrow decreed it. The artist takes elements as banal as an ashtray, moldy lemons, or a backgammon board, and makes her own reproduction in ceramics. And so, from ordinary items, art exhibitions and brands are made in the art scene.
7. Moses McKenzieWho, at 24, can say that she has a published work - and acclaimed by publications such as The Guardian? The answer is Moses McKenzie, a Briton who, before making his literary debut, began by writing song lyrics. Now he is preparing to adapt his work, An Olive Grove in Ends, for the small screen.
8. Sofia MalamuteFrom Buenos Aires she arrived in the United States and, camera in hand, she went through the most intimate circles of high society, giving us a privileged look behind the Hollywood curtain. The photographer takes the most relevant figures of contemporary culture (read Dua Lipa, Bella Hadid, and Kaia Gerber) and bathes them in an aesthetic that only Malamute can achieve.
9. Maria ClaraKnitting may be, for Maria Clara, a therapy, but the Portuguese designer's work is, first and foremost, an art form. With a degree in Fashion Design, her academic path has already taken her to Central Saint Martins, where she specialized in knitting. In 2022, Maria Clara undoubtedly distinguished herself at ModaLisboa's Sangue Novo (New Blood) competition and is now part of the official calendar of this event.
10. Lauren JanuhowskiIt is through fabrics that Lauren Januhowski tells her life story, using both artisanal sewing techniques and innovative printing processes. The North American artist has exhibited her work in numerous Parisian galleries, and most recently was at Art Basel as part of La Prairie's sponsored emerging artist collective, the Bauhaus Women Collective.
11. RIMON Originally from the small country of Eritrea in northeast Africa, RIMON stands out for its emotive composition and idiosyncratic vocal style. This fusion, unique in the world of music, is only accentuated by his disregard for the boundaries of musical genres. Hip-hop, soul, dancehall: RIMON is anything we want it to be, and we can't turn our eyes away, much less our ears.
12. Elsa RebeloBorn and raised in Caldas da Rainha, it seems that it was not Elsa Rebelo who chose ceramics, but ceramics that chose her. The current artistic director of the Fábrica Bordallo Pinheiro made her first piece at the age of eight and since then, has amassed a resume of impressive works that reflect her life's experiences. As a teacher, she transmits the ancestral techniques she inherited from her father so that they will never be lost to time.
13. Zé BurnaySon of a French comic book collector, Zé Burnay was born with a taste for the art of illustration in his blood. His creations capture a fascination invoked directly from a work by H. P. Lovecraft. His illustrations can be seen in numerous books and music albums, but the most reliable way to see Burnay's splendid talent is certainly through his original comic strip, Andromeda.
14. L'ImpératriceWhenever we feel that the art of music has become too boring, bands like L'Impératrice are the perfect remedy. The French band maintains a resistance to the world's pretentious seriousness. Taking inspiration from the fun and lightness of the disco style, L'Impératrice composes eccentric and fun dance music. With three albums under their arm, the band continues to hone its magnetism.
15. Miguel RamalhoIt wasn't Miguel Ramalho who chose dance, it was dance that chose him. At least that's how the Portuguese dancer and choreographer thinks about the art that occupies his days. With an exemplary career, carrying with him the title of a principal dancer of the National Ballet Company, the extent of his knowledge also makes him one of the most prodigious choreographers in the national territory.
16. Carolina AmaralAt 28, Carolina Amaral was the revelation of Netflix's first Portuguese series, Glória (2021). But the actress' story goes back much further - according to herself, her passion for art started the first time she stepped on a stage. Even with an enviable career, Carolina Amaral's path has just begun.
17. João FortunaJoão Fortuna's maximalist style quickly becomes a powerful memory to those who come in contact with his work. Specialized in collage, the Portuguese artist has already participated in dozens of exhibitions all over the country, from the Sociedade de Belas Artes to the IMINENTE Festival, where he presented his most recent set of creations entitled City - The Biggest Playground.
18. ChantalBased in Copenhagen, Chantal Horeis is one of the sweetest presences in the world of illustration. The artist's creations are a simplification of natural landscapes, articulated through an idiosyncratic color palette. More than natural inspiration, the Danish illustrator is a master of the art of capturing the small moments of life.
19. FebenBeyoncé, Ashley Graham, and Janelle Monáe are just some of the celebrities who have promoted Feben's work. The British designer, a graduate of Central Saint Martins, uses her creations to reflect on topics such as racism and the feeling of displacement, giving a surreal touch to classic tailoring and hand embroidery. She is already a regular at London Fashion Week.
20. MADbyMADMata Durikovicova is the name behind MADbyMAD, the fashion brand that is revolutionizing the textile industry. Based on the concept of "bio-luxury," the designer uses natural materials - natural materials so natural they can be ingested - to create pieces that the standards of Haute Couture. Her innovative work has already received awards from LVMH and the Swarovski Foundation.
