Back to Work Issue
As we return to work, our houses take on the role of shelters, hideaways from the hustle and bustle of the world. New beginnings require a blank canvas, and it is with that in mind that we create the perfect refuge between four walls. We travelled to Sanremo, Italy, to discover how the right furniture can transform the home into a safe haven, thanks to luxurious creations designed by Flexform.
A few kilometers from the border with France lies Sanremo, an Italian seaside province known for its eponymous music festival and the sumptuous-looking buildings that fill the city's hillsides. But there is one that stands out for its abundant vegetation and imposing elegance. It is called Villa sull'acqua, and it was built to fill a once-abandoned space that was supposed to be used as a tennis court. As the court never came to be, weeds took over the barriers that bordered the land, until architects Calvi Ceschia Viganò realized the potential of the space. “We seized the opportunity, with this deteriorated site, to establish a degree of balance between the visually overbearing presence of the adjoining buildings to the west and the elegance of the tree-filled garden and swimming pool (...) on the east”, the company said in a statement. The flora that proliferates outside is reminiscent of a winter garden. But after entering, we discover sophisticated rooms, inhabited by unique pieces of furniture forged by Flexform's Italian mastery.
As a sequel to the home business set up by the Galimberti brothers in 1959, Flexform is a family-run company based in Italy. Its furniture is made in one country - its homeland - and the “made in Italy” label covers every step of production, from the first drafts of the design to its finishes. A team of specialists works closely with the brand, imagining the pieces and coordinating the collections. Villa sull'acqua was a fruit of the collaboration with Antonio Citterio, one of the most important designers working with Flexform. Citterio is the author of the Gregory sofa, one of the centerpieces of the Sanremo villa, whose comfort is ensured by the quality of the materials selected (a combination of leather and fabric). To reinforce the harmony of the room, a pair of Sveva armchairs complements the sofa's cozy presence. Antonio Citterio also designed the Atlante Light sofa, an addition that brings life to the living room, and the Peter Outdoor armchairs, designed to welcome guests on a celebratory evening.
Even if sofas may represent the core of Flexform's offerings, Villa sull'acqua is a proof of the brand's versatility. In the family room, the Isabel chairs stand out in a refined copper color, which contrasts with the First Steps chairs in the dining room, which have a rustic and relaxed appearance. Flexform's portfolio also includes outdoor furniture, such as tables, chaises longues and accessories that add a finishing touch to the decoration of the space. Although eclectic, the Italian brand's style is characterized by elegance and timelessness. Their idea of luxury is not one of excess or abundance, but of simplicity, where materials and modern lines speak for themselves. We can't all build a haven in Sanremo, but anyone can replicate the feel of Villa sull'acqua in their own home. The rules are simple: start with abundant greenery, then fill the open spaces, filled with natural light, with pieces of furniture that emphasize comfort and modern aesthetics, designed by Flexform. It will be difficult to want to leave the house.
