São garrafas, sapatos, pratos, isqueiros, roupa, sacos e beatas de cigarro. Usamos cada um destes objetos todos os dias sem falta enquanto nos dá jeito. E o que acontece quando o isqueiro fica sem gás? Ou quando o saco se rasga? O lixo não evapora, pode sair do nosso campo de visão, mas continua a ocupar espaço do planeta. Para não nos deixar ignorar, há quem pegue nestes resíduos e faça deles o improvável - arte.

[EV] There are bottles, shoes, plates, lighters, clothing, bags and cigarette buutts. We use each of these objects every day while they still serve us a purpose. And what happens when the lighter runs out of gas? Or when the bag rips? Trash doesn’t evaporate, it may leave our field of view, but it still takes up space on the planet. To prevent us from ignoring it, there are those who take the residue and make something unlikely out of it - art.

Em criança, caminhava pela praia e apanhava conchas e pedras brilhantes. Quando cresceu, viu-se a fazer o mesmo, mas a encher os bolsos de lixo. O oceano é a especialidade da artista holandesa, que faz arte das garrafas, embalagens e balões de plástico que recolhe no mar. O objetivo é simples: através da repulsa que vem dos resíduos, criar um impacto e fazer a diferença na prevenção da poluição.

[EV] As a child, she would walk through the beach and collect seashells and shiny rocks. When she grew up, she found herself doing the same, but filling her pockets with trash instead. The ocean is the specialty of the dutch artist, who makes art out of bottles, packages and plastic balloons she gathers from the sea. The point is simple: through the disgust that comes from the litter, leave an impact and make a difference in preventing pollution.

Do Reino Unido para o mundo, a artista viaja por todo o globo numa missão de fotografar resíduos retirados do oceano. Há anos a trabalhar para um portfólio que já lhe concedeu dezenas de exposições, como no Museu Victoria e Albert e na Fundação Aperture em Nova Iorque, a britânica venceu, em 2018, uma bolsa para pesquisa e exploração da Sociedade da National Geographic. Agora, o compromisso continua a levá-la a expor o lixo que infesta o mar numa representação lunar.

[EV] From the United Kingdom into the world, the artist travels all over the globe in a mission to photograph residue removed from the ocean. For many years she has been working on a portfolio which has provided her with dozens of exhibits, like at the Victoria and Albert Museum and at the Aperture Foundation in New York, the British woman won, in 2018, a research and exploration grant from the National Geographic Society. Now, her commitment still leads her to expose all the trash that infests the sea in a lunar representation.

Nascido em Itália, já passou pela Austrália e hoje surfa mares portugueses. O fotógrafo trabalha com o oceano como sua musa, mas nas ondas veio a descobrir detritos, que agora utiliza como objeto. São pratos, latas e óculos - itens que usamos e descartamos, aceitando sem escrúpulos o destino que terão na água. O italiano quer reativar a nossa sensibilidade não só para com estes utensílios, mas também para com o ambiente.

[EV] Born in Italy, he has lived in Australia and now surfs Portuguese seas. The photographer works with the ocean as his muse, but in the waves he found debris, which he now uses as his object. They are plates, cans and glasses - items we use and discard, unbothered we accept the fate they will have in the water. The Italian man wants to reactivate our sensitivity not only towards these utensils but also towards the environment.

Cada peça do artista espanhol é uma mensagem ao panorama socio-político global, seja a vigilância, a corrupção, a ganância ou a destruição ambiental. Se há uma palavra que descreve o seu portfólio, é desilusão - com a política, a publicidade e o consumismo exagerado. Já teve mostras expostas por todo o mundo, incluindo em Portugal, no México e na Noruega, e ainda no Museum of Modern Art em Nova Iorque.

[EV] Each piece by the Spanish artist is a message to the global socio-political setting, whether it’s about vigilance, corruption, greed or environmental destruction. If there is a word that describes his portfolio, it’s disappointment - with politics, advertising and excessive consumerism. He has had exhibits all over the world, including in Portugal, Mexico and Norway, and even at the MoMA in New York.

Foi a trabalhar como modelo que descobriu a paixão pela fotografia e hoje utiliza a arte para fazer experiências com diferentes técnicas e iluminação. Mas, mais do que isso, o alemão pega em plástico - o material responsável por parte da poluição do planeta - e dá uma perspetiva menos apocalíptica da omnipresença deste elemento destrutivo.

[EV] It was while working as a model that he discovered his passion for photography and now uses the art to conduct experiments with different techniques and lighting. But, more than that, the German man takes plastic - the material responsible for part of the pollution in the planet - and gives it a less apocalyptic perspective of the omnipresence of this destructive element.
