English Version | Art is not pretty

Arts issue

Art impacts, seduces, moves, excites, captivates, it is never lukewarm.

“Pretty”… That vanilla adjective that neither imposes itself nor has any place in an artistic essay, not even when it comes to a Beauty editorial. This doesn’t mean that it has no appeal, that it doesn’t capture attention, that it doesn’t intrigue – quite the contrary, it is expected to do so. But to call it “cute” or “pretty” or any other attribute that is neither exciting nor moving, that doesn’t overwhelms but also doesn’t shock, or that is too politically correct, is to reduce a creation to the status of average, a masterpiece as commonplace, a piece of art as common. And average, common or commonplace is something that these hairdos are not: they defy gravity and leave no one indifferent to their structural mastery.

Translated from the original in the Arts Issue, published November 2023. Full stories and credits in the print version.
