The iconic imagery of Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal (1957) serves as the starting point for one of the most sophisticated winter trends.
Not as gloomy as Death, Bergman's head-covering character played by Bengt Ekerot, but just as mysterious as the Swedish film's photography, hooded dresses have brought a new look to this type of garment, the hood, more commonly related to sportswear and rainwear. Now, the hood has left jackets and sweaters to become part of delicate dresses as an element of their form rather than their function. Of course, they continue to fulfill their protective and warming purpose in many looks - in a ba- laclava version, for example - but always with class and elegance in mind, always with a touch of aristocracy, always with a red carpet allure (which has not shied away from making the trend worthwhile). The following pages are an ode to that almost melancholic side that is so characteristic of winter, looking to Nordic noir for a certain nostalgia, but putting a positive perspective on it with a touch of romanticism, a dichotomy that the trend itself also brings. As if there were something warm in the darkness; as if there were something dark in the light.
