The Mystery Issue

An unavoidable name in stylised figurativism, Francis Bacon (1909-1992) and his art serve as the fuse for this Beauty sequence, which delivers an astonishing artistic touch.

As in much of the Anglo-Irish painter's work, the human figure takes centre stage, but in an almost abstract, yet recognisable way. This disfigured side of the figure as we know it, combined with the lugubrious and sinister brushstrokes, make Bacon's portfolio as dark as it is captivating. More or less like the following pages: the usual canons of make-up are subverted to move on to a transcendent realm, where makeup is celebrated, yes, but also the inspirations of art that come from beyond to be translated into an earthly experience - that and the enjoyment of good photographs.

Translated from the original in Vogues Portugal’s “The Mystery Issue” Issue, published October 2024. Full stories and credits in the print issue.
