English Version | A carnation on the skin

The Memories Issue

I carve in my skin the times when I had no voice. The times when freedom lived in memory and memories seemed to be the only freedom.

Carved on the skin, like a tattoo, the times of repression, without expression, so one never forgets what was forever embedded in one’s heart. Recorded in memory remains the censorship and the will to never return there, when the wills of others limited self-love, identity, thought. Memories that sometimes seem to wither like a carnation that has been lost over time, as if time erased all the learning that reality, our parents, our grandparents always wanted to be carved in our mind, in our speech, in our posture, in a free attitude. A carnation on the skin. To never forget. To always remember that freedom is fragile. Like a carnation.

Translated from the original published in The Memories Issue, from April 2024. Full stories and credits are in the print version.
