The Icons Issue
The title of the documentary about the woman who was Franca Sozzani became an emblematic film, but the protagonist was already an icon.
An unrivalled figure in the fashion industry, she headed Vogue Italia as its director from 1988 until her death in 2016, and the title was forever associated with her. Because she stamped her identity on it, without undermining the Vogue DNA; because she didn't let any kind of constraint stop her from pursuing her unique creativity; because she didn't allow conservatism to stifle her premise of breaking down barriers; because she didn't let comfort stand in the way of vanity. That was Franca Sozzani, the empowered woman whose memory is honoured in this editorial, through references to her that are also emblematic (some of which were even mentioned in the interview with her son and director, Francesco Carrozini, on the previous pages). That was Franca Sozzani, visionary, daring, intrepid. That was Franca Sozzani. And isn't that what Vogue is like, too?
