The Icons Issue

Emblematic paintings from another time serve as a fuse for futuristic fashion images, as if a Picasso, a Matisse or a Magritte were brushing up on pages devoted to the Space Age.

If icons are timeless, can we even change their temporality? And will they retain their iconic aspect if we do? Would Schiele still recognise himself in these contemporary tributes? Or a recognisable Modigliani in one of these photographed interpretations? Does Duchamp have the same irreverence in Sidereal Space? These 20th century artists 20th century artists who broke conventions and were ahead of their time, are they still at the forefront outside their era in the 21st century? 21ST CENTURY? All the signs of the future - and this narrative of the present - point to yes: an icon is always an icon, whatever the time. And the rest is homage.
