No wonder the ripple effect - which, from a small point of disturbance on the surface, creates a chain of ever-larger circular waves - influences all life in and out of water, in a kind of liquid butterfly effect that can be as devastating as well as purifying. It is in this duality of opposites that the ripple effect is such a sure metaphor for life. It is as cliché as saying that we may not choose the waves that are created, but we can learn how to swim.
