The Kitsch Issue

The bad side of kitsch is that it can be confused with everything in excess, over the top, more is more, retro and dated (though not vintage)...

The bad side of kitsch is that it can be confused with a matter of taste - or lack thereof. But the good side of kitsch is that all these assumptions are also its strong point: the fun of taking risks, of making exaggeration count, of being cheesy in its most desirable sense, of risking faux pas in the wardrobe, one after another, and that being the right track. The good side of kitsch is that it brings with it the best and worst of past decades without it having gone out of fashion - and the 2000s are lavish in references of the genre, particularly in the queen of Y2k, the icon of that time, Paris Hilton: the glitter, the low-rise jeans with the too-short tops, the bling-bling, the pose, the sparkles, the sweet and aloof air, the transparencies… and the catch-phrases. That’s (still) hot.
