What happens backstage at Vogue Portugal, doesn't stay backstage. Here's your all-access pass to The Revolution Issue, published April 2023.

A blow to the carnation…

…and another one to the horseshoe is a Portuguese figure of speech that means not to compromise or defend both sides of a quarrel. But this is not the only fun fact involving carnations, that symbolic flower of April 25th. Did you know that…

…there are more than 300 species of carnations?

…the scientific name is Dianthus Caryophyllus? Of Greek origin, it means "Flower of the Gods" and the legend - a tragic one - says that the term Dianthus comes from the goddess Diana, who fell in love with a shepherd boy. But the young man rejected her, so the goddess plucked out his eyes and threw them to the ground. In their place, carnations grew.

…the Christian stories actually say that the carnation was born from the tears of the Virgin Mary when she saw Jesus carry the cross?

…in Victorian times, they were used to exchange messages? Different colors meant a myriad of responses.

…the colors of carnations still have symbolism? Whites are associated with a mother's purity, love and innocence; red ones are respect, love and passion, as well as admiration; and pink-fuchsia suggest gratitude and happiness, for example.

To celebrate Freedom Day, don't forget these fun facts and also read the article on page 252.

Dude with sign

Protest posters can be a visual reference for public demonstrations, but there are phrases that do not need to be written on cardboard or held in hand to be the perfect fuse, inspiration and slogan for Revolution. This is just a selection, but there is many more throughout the magazine - and, since we’re talking about protesting, we remind everyone why it is and will always be important to do so in Formal Complaint, on page 94.

“Better to die fighting for freedom then be a prisoner all the days of your life.” ― Bob Marley

“Remember, remember always, that all of us, and you and I especially, are descended from immigrants and revolutionists.” ― Franklin D. Roosevelt

“Those who make peaceful revolution impossible will make violent revolution inevitable.” ― John F. Kennedy

“The Revolution introduced me to art, and in turn, art introduced me to the Revolution!” ― Albert Einstein

“There is no final one; revolutions are infinite.” ― Yevgeny Zamyatin, “We”

“The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You trade in your sense for an act. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask. There can't be any large-scale revolution until there's a personal revolution, on an individual level. It's got to happen inside first.” ― Jim Morrison.

“We have it in our power to begin the world over again.” ― Thomas Paine

“I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical.” ― Thomas Jefferson
