Symbol of energy – our own and many others – the star that sets moods and recharges batteries has more to it besides its energizing factor. For example, did you know that the Sun accounts for 99.86% of the mass of the solar system (leaving no room for doubt about the reason for its title)? Also know that its light takes eight minutes to reach Earth and that temperatures inside the Sun can reach 15 million degrees Celsius – hot enough to sustain nuclear fusion. The Sun is the closest star to our planet, that's why we see it so big and bright – it's the only star in our solar system and it's its center, and it's its gravity that holds up the entire system around it. Oh, and it's about 109 times wider than Earth. Then there's that detail that the most likely, or at least possible, is that one day it will end up swallowing the Earth, but let's leave that fun fact for a topic about the end of the world, we have time - the phenomenon won't happen for a billions of years, still.

Fun facts filled with energy

The theme of this issue has more than meets the eye and the term is as broad as the way we use it. Although, in this issue, we dissect “energy” in a million ways, here's five more. 1. Lightning produces five times more heat than the Sun: this electrical discharge, when released, superheats the air to almost 30,000º C. And the power released by lightning is the equivalent of detonating a ton of TNT. 2. Sixty minutes of solar energy can “feed” the Earth for a year: the sun releases 430 quintillion – 430,000,000,000,000,000,000 – joules of energy to the Earth per hour. If we could store 60 minutes of this energy, it would be enough to power the Earth for an entire year. 3. Joule is the measure used for mechanical energy (work) and comprises the amount of energy that corresponds to the application of a force of one newton over one meter. 4. The word energy derives from the ancient Greek: energeia, a term coined by Aristotle in 384 BC, describes a “state of being at work.” 5. Food is a form of chemical energy: we tend to associate energy with electricity and fuel, but food is the energy that sustains living organisms so they can grow, repair and reproduce. Usually measured in calories or joules, it is released into the body during digestion and converted into mechanical energy or heat.

Yellow from the other siiiiiiide!

There's no shortage of color in LightHouse Publishing's newsroom, and yellow is among the most vibrant. Placards imitating warning signs, but with artistic intervention where yellow-danger serves as a canvas; the famous Balloon Dog, by Jeff Koons, in sun-yellow adorning shelves; a giant smiley face (after all, it was the star of a cover of GQ Portugal) that peeks in between frames; and even paintings, armchairs, lamps, whole sofas in inviting yellow… Even rubber ducks punctuate our open-space, greeting “Yellow” to anyone who arrives.
