Com a chegada oficial da award season foi tempo de celebrar o melhor da indústria, no grande e pequeno ecrã. Numa edição que se destacou pelo forte cariz solidário - depois de, no 1º dia do ano, ter sido apresentado o movimento denominado Time’s Up, contra a desigualdade e o assédio sexual contra as mulheres-, a elegância esteve omnipresente em coordenados preto total.  

Com a minissérie Big Little Lies a arrecadar os quatro prémios para os quais estava nomeada, houve ainda algumas surpresas, como a vitória de Saoirse Ronan, a protagonista de Lady Bird, que venceu o prémio na categoria de Melhor atriz num filme de comédia ou musical. A apresentadora Oprah Winfrey foi homenageada com o prémio Cecil B. DeMille Award.
